Lucas Rhoa Blocks for Texas Friday. The Guy Across From Him Used to Be His Teammate.

Marcus Fakatou has been putting his hands in Lucas Rhoa's chest since the two of them were underclassmen at the same school. Friday it finally goes on a scoreboard.

Orange Lutheran plays at Sierra Canyon on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. in Chatsworth, according to the Lancers' 2026 schedule. Rhoa is Orange Lutheran's senior offensive lineman and a Texas commit. Fakatou is a five-star defensive lineman committed to Ohio State who spent his first three high school seasons at Orange Lutheran before transferring to Sierra Canyon for his senior year.

Same practice field for three years. Opposite sidelines now.

The player college staffs are actually buying

You spot Rhoa before anyone snaps a ball. He runs the Lancers' warmup like a drum major, per the Los Angeles Times, which watched him jump and the line jump, swing his arms and 60 players follow.

The Times caught two moments off the field. When Orange Lutheran's punter pinned Basha inside the three, Rhoa was off the bench first, the paper reported. When a teammate's holding penalty erased a 20-yard run, Rhoa patted the player's helmet and jogged back to the huddle, according to the Times. No speech. Next play.

That is the part staffs pay for.

The film

The football is there too. Orange Lutheran pulls Rhoa into motion after the snap and lets him clear more than one body to open a lane, per the Times. In protection he takes the outside rusher one-on-one and ends the rep — no help, no slide.

Line coach Chris Ward told the Times that Rhoa has been dominant on his own reps and has grown into the player who keeps the young starters from unraveling, which matters on a front that includes first-time varsity players. Head coach Ray Fenton told the Times the team moves the way Rhoa moves.

Rhoa, on facing his old teammate, told the Times: "I've seen him the most out of anybody."

The measurables, and a warning about them

Rhoa is listed at 6-foot-5. His weight runs from 280 on Rivals to 305 on On3's preseason all-state team. 247Sports grades him an 88 — top-40 in California and top-55 among tackles nationally — and flags short arms as the reason he projects inside to guard.

Fakatou is listed 6-6 to 6-7 and between 275 and 290 pounds, ranked the No. 2 defensive lineman in the 2027 class after reclassifying up from 2028, per recruiting sites.

The sites do not agree on either player's weight. Take every number you read this week with that in mind.

Last year, and one detail that makes Friday strange

Sierra Canyon won the September 2025 meeting 41-9 with six sacks and 10 tackles for loss, per MaxPreps. Lancers coach Rod Sherman said afterward it was the best team the school had ever produced, according to the Times. Orange Lutheran completed five passes that night.

Here is the detail. Orange Lutheran's only touchdown in that game came off a blocked field goal returned 71 yards by Matthew Zapien, per MaxPreps — and Fakatou blocked it, playing for Orange Lutheran at the time.

He scored their points. Now he's trying to erase them.

Where both teams stand

• Orange Lutheran is 3-1, per MaxPreps, after shutting out Gardena Serra 35-0 on Sept. 11. The only loss is a 23-22 opener to Miami Central.
• Sierra Canyon is 3-0, per MaxPreps, and has not been challenged: 24-7 over Chaminade-Madonna in Florida, then a 52-0 win over Saint Louis on the same night Orange Lutheran blanked Serra.

Hot take, and you can hold me to it

Sierra Canyon wins — but by less than two touchdowns, and Fakatou does not get a sack on a snap where Rhoa is the primary blocker. Orange Lutheran will slide protection away from him and dare someone else to win.

If Fakatou beats Rhoa clean and the Trailblazers pull away by 25 again, I was wrong, and I'll say so next week.

The reason to watch is not the final score. A Texas commit and an Ohio State commit already know every move the other one makes, and this rivalry follows them to Saturdays. Big Ten against SEC, starting in Chatsworth.
