Outgained by 175 Yards, Mater Dei Found the 72 That Mattered

By Marcus Bellweather | RepMax

SANTA ANA, Calif. — Before the comeback, Mater Dei had 37 second-half yards on 15 snaps. That's where the evaluation of this game starts.

With 3:26 left, the Monarchs trailed St. John Bosco 35–21. Their offense hadn't moved in two quarters. Then freshman quarterback Paytyn Guess hit three throws that turned a lost night into a 36–35 Trinity League win, which is now one of the wildest finishes this rivalry has produced.

The stat sheet went to Bosco: 490 total yards to Mater Dei's 315. The scoreboard went to Mater Dei, and that gap tells you more about the playoffs than the final score does.

How Bosco Built a Two-Touchdown Cushion

The first half was a heavyweight trade. Mater Dei's Montana Toilolo recovered a fumble on Bosco's first snap, and Guess scored on a 19-yard run 44 seconds into the game. Malau'ulu answered on the ground. Guess threw a 23-yard touchdown. Maliq Allen took a short pass 64 yards to tie it at 14. Guess then punched in a keeper before the break, and Mater Dei went in up 21–14.

The second half belonged to Koa Malau'ulu.

The third-year starter finished 26 of 35 for 365 yards with three touchdown passes and a rushing score. The second-half sequence is the part worth rewinding:

  • Jacob Reid's 27-yard catch set up a 27-yard strike to Trevon Bates, tying it 21–21 with 8:48 left in the third.

  • At 3:50 of the third, Malau'ulu put a ball in the back corner for 6-foot-4 sophomore Kuika Moaalii. That gave Bosco its first lead, 28–21. RepMax Media's sideline smart-glasses camera caught the play at field level, and the catch-point win looks even cleaner from there.

  • Allen capped a 55-yard drive with a 4-yard run at 4:35 of the fourth. 35–21.

That made 21 unanswered points. Bosco's defense had Mater Dei completely stuck. Fifteen plays, 37 yards.

The Final 3:26, Snap by Snap

  1. 3:26 left: Guess finds Gavin Honore for 55 yards and a touchdown. 35–28. It was Mater Dei's first explosive play of the half.

  2. Under a minute left: The Monarchs get the ball back at their own 28.

  3. First snap of the drive: Guess to freshman Tristan Brown for 49 yards. The drive was suddenly alive.

  4. Five plays later, 7.5 seconds left: Guess to Brown again, 12 yards, snatched out of the air in the end zone. 35–34.

  5. The decision: Head coach Raul Lara passes on the kick and the overtime it would buy. He goes for two.

  6. The conversion: Sophomore tight end Tyler Fritz runs a wheel route, juggles the throw, and secures it. It was his only catch of the night. 36–35.

The comeback came from three throws and one call by Lara.

Evaluations

Paytyn Guess, QB, Mater Dei (Class of 2030) 11 of 15, 214 yards, five total touchdowns. His growth curve matters more than any one throw. Over his last four games he's averaging two touchdown passes per game. Over his first six it was 0.3. He came off the bench against Corona Centennial in Week 3 and never gave the job back. His pocket poise on the final drive was real. The open question for the playoffs is protection: Santa Margarita sacked him seven times earlier this season, and Bosco's front had him bottled up for most of the second half Friday.

Koa Malau'ulu, QB, St. John Bosco 365 passing yards, four total touchdowns, and a loss he didn't deserve. He threw on time to the boundary all second half and put the Moaalii touchdown where only his receiver could get it.

Kuika Moaalii, WR, St. John Bosco (sophomore) 7 catches, 128 yards, 1 touchdown. At 6-foot-4 he already wins at the catch point like an upperclassman. That frame and those hands fit a boundary X receiver at the next level. My read: he's the best long-term college prospect who played in this game.

Tristan Brown, WR, Mater Dei (freshman) 4 catches, 104 yards, 1 touchdown, with 61 of those yards on the final drive. Two catches decided it.

Gavin Honore, WR, Mater Dei 5 catches, 97 yards. His 55-yard touchdown snapped a half-long drought and made the final drive possible.

Maliq Allen, RB, St. John Bosco 18 carries for 84 yards and a score, plus the 64-yard catch-and-run. He's a true dual-threat back who gives Bosco answers in both phases.

Tyler Fritz, TE, Mater Dei (sophomore) One catch, two points, and a wheel route that will be on Mater Dei's highlight reel for a long time.

My Call (Opinion)

If these two meet again in the Southern Section Division I bracket, Bosco wins.

Mater Dei needed three explosive plays in roughly three minutes to overcome a 175-yard deficit. Explosive plays don't repeat on command. Bosco's yardage edge was steady for two quarters. Malau'ulu's timing and Moaalii's size are the kind of advantages that travel into December.

The case against my call is Guess. A freshman whose touchdown rate has jumped from 0.3 to 2.0 per game in a month isn't finished improving. If Mater Dei's line keeps him clean, this pick could look bad fast.

Where It Leaves Both Programs

Mater Dei finishes 8–2 overall and 4–1 in league, good for second place in the Trinity League and a likely No. 3 seed in Division I. Santa Margarita won the league title.

Bosco falls to 7–3 and 3–2. That's the Braves' first three-loss season since 2017, and it lands them in line for the No. 4 or No. 5 seed. They entered the season ranked No. 1 nationally by MaxPreps and closed the regular season at No. 11. Mater Dei sat at No. 18.

Mater Dei now leads the all-time series 34–13 and has won five straight.

Your turn: Is Paytyn Guess already the best quarterback in the Trinity League, or does Malau'ulu's 365-yard night say otherwise? Make your case in the comments, then follow Guess, Moaalii and the rest of SoCal's rising classes on RepMax.io.
